TROUBLED lender Friends First Finance secured more than €430,000 in judgments against borrowers over a two-day period last week, the latest issue of debt monitor Stubbs Gazette reveals.
Friends First Finance , which is the lending arm of the insurance company bearing the same name, announced plans to quit the market in late August having written off bad debts of €25m in the first half of the year.
The Stubbs Gazette listings show the lender is still actively trying to recoup some of the money it loaned by seeking registered judgments in the courts. On December 1, Friends First registered two judgments in the High Court -- one for €185,500 against a Dublin businessman and another for €45,800 against a Wexford businessman.
A day later, the lender registered a judgment for almost €200,000 against a Laois businessman. Friends First isn't the only lender using registered judgments to chase up bad debts, with both AIB and Bank of Scotland (Ireland) (BoSI) also featuring in Stubbs this week.
BoSI registered a judgment of €218,500 against an Offaly businessman on December 1, while AIB registered a judgment for almost €44,000 against a Meath building contractor on November 26.

Debt collector Briddick O'Sullivan had 16 judgments against it before it collapsed last weekend, the latest issue of 'Stubbs Gazette' shows.

The company, one of the largest debt collectors in Ireland, confirmed to the 'Sunday Business Post' last weekend that it had gone into voluntary liquidation, effectively winding up its operations.

This week's 'Stubbs Gazette' shows Briddick O'Sullivan has been on the receiving end of judgments since 2005, as creditors sought to claim their dues.

Most of the judgments are for between €2,000 and €4,000, but there are several larger amounts including a €14,700 charge by Killorglin Credit Union in April 2007 and a €9,600 charge by Agrigear that March.

Other creditors with judgments include legal firm Mason Hayes Curran, which has a €2,100 charge outstanding since June 2007 and Powerscreen Ireland which has a judgment of €6,300 out since March 2007.

The judgments were all secured in county courts and none of them were formally registered with the High Court.

Briddick O'Sullivan is expected to hold a creditors' meeting on June 16. The latest accounts for the debt collector, to the end of March 2007, show retained losses of €972,000.
